• I’m inspired by projects that defy classification, ones that do not have a precedent. The process of transforming a century old dilapidated chicken coop into a space for work and relaxation definitely stood on its own.

Throughout the project, I was driven by the homeowner’s simple request to have a space that felt as though it had always been ‘that way.’ Ironically, to achieve this we had to tear down the entire structure, save the posts and beams. From the foundation up, we reconstructed the building, adding a bathroom, reclaimed wood floors, antique cast iron windows and a slate roof.

We wanted the space to feel anchored to the past in a very important, almost reverent, way, while allowing for the ease of modern conveniences. To do so, the furniture takes on many purposes. We designed the credenza to house media, a refrigerator and storage items. By hiding the modern necessities, we were able to maintain the open dialogue between the interiors and the pasture it overlooks.

Each piece was chosen because it told a story, one of time, character, quality, resilience and beauty. Ultimately, we wanted the client to feel as though time had stood still when he retreats to A Gentleman’s Coop, leaving him recharged and anew.
